The best low-spin drivers for slower-swing players
In our forums, our members have been discussing the best low spin drivers for slower swing players. WRXer ‘mikefjohnson’ kicks off the thread outlining where he’s at, saying:
“I am a slow swing player, average about 240 of thee tee. That said, I hit the ball high and struggle with too much backspin.
I lose distance due to higher ball flight and high backspin and getting almost zero rollout. I hit the ball incredibly straight, so forgiveness is not a problem.
So, as long as I choose the right shaft, would an LS head work for me? I am particularly interested in the DS Adapt LS head, with a reg flex shaft.
Conversely, same question but with a Max K (higher spinning launching head), but with a low/low shaft like the HZRDUS black 60 or Tensei Black 1K that comes as the standard shafts in the Arnold Palmer and Season Opener limited edition DS Adapt drivers. I know ultimately testing is best, however I am hours away from place to test with a simulator.
I want to buy one of the limited edition drivers, but can only find the LS or MaxK versions in regular flex. So do I go with the MaxK and trust the low/low shaft will balance out the higher spinning head, or go with the LS and trust the reg flex shaft plus the adjustable weights in the LS will do the trick?”
And our members have been sharing their picks and advice in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Lord Helmet: “Definitely low loft IMHO on the head. Would think that would help the most.”
- ChaosTheory: “One big thing in your favor is that with adjustable drivers, you have several loft settings to choose from. The first thing that addresses your problem would be to play a lower loft driver. Lower loft = lower flight and less spin. You might simply need less loft, not necessarily a low spin model. Without knowing what you play now, I’d say buy something that is lower loft and then find the correct loft setting. And if you are not already playing the lowest setting on your driver, turn it down.”
- Mjtiger: “I think you may also benefit from going longer and softer in shaft length/flex. As far as heads, I’d stay away from Ping if maximum distance is your goal. Your Qi10 is a great head, so maybe try an LS TaylorMade.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

240 struggling with backspin? Change the shaft. Higher kick and/or stiffer.
