Srixon ZXi5 vs ZXi7 irons – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Srixon’s ZXi 5 and ZXi7 irons. WRXer ‘kippjr23’ is in the market for new clubs, and reaches out to fellow members saying:
“6-7 handicap here. I typically fall within that range. Currently game Srixon Z585 4-5 iron alongside Srixon 785 6-PW.
It is time to upgrade and I have not been in the market for a while. How does the forgiveness compare with the new ZXI5/ZXI7? My hunch is to go for a full set of ZXi5 instead of another combo set. What has been everyones experience?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Sean124: “ZXi5 is noticeably more forgiving and higher launching loft-for-loft. ZXi7 feels better and spins more, while being forgiving for what it is. These irons are a single digits dream for building a combo set. I’m a + cap and currently only playing the ZXi5 in 4 iron but probably wouldn’t feel like I was giving up much control if I had them in 5-6. I’ve been thinking about ordering the 5 iron.”
- mip021: “I play off a 7. Recently demo’d both and went with the ZXi5 (5-PW). I picked the most forgiving model that I can look at.”
- me05501: “I came from playing Z765’s into the ZX world. I’ve had combo sets of ZX7/Z Forged and ZX5/ZX7. The earlier generations of 5’s and 7’s such as the 765/565 era were more similar than different. To me the ZX series are too different to combo to my tastes. The 5’s have enormous soles and very thin/springy faces. They feel and work very differently than the 7’s IMO. I have never been able to get used to them.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
