From the GolfWRX archives: Members Choice – Best irons of 2024

Published

on

Editor’s note: Looking ahead to where we take our golf equipment coverage in the future (launch season will be here soon enough!), we want to look behind us more frequently. What does that mean, exactly? Well, we want to both place new releases in their historical contexts and highlight past coverage by, as we have done from time to time, opening the GolfWRX archives.

For this installment, we’re heading back a couple of years to the results of our forum members’ voting for the best irons of the year. In an odd moment in GolfWRX Members Choice history, we had a tie at the top, with two irons getting the exact same number of votes.

Let’s turn back the clock to 2024.

Best irons of 2024: The top 5

T1. Srixon ZX7 Mk II (13.33%)

Srixon’s pitch: “A players iron with tour-preferred looks and the pure feel of a premium blade, offering total control—ZX7 Mk II delivers it all. Featuring a compact shape, narrow topline, single-piece forging, and narrow sole.”

You can read what other golfers are saying about the irons in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here. Shop Srixon ZX7 Mk II irons here.

T1. Titleist T150 (13.33%)

Titleist’s pitch: “The faster Tour iron. T150 is built on the same fully forged platform as T100 but engineered to be faster and longer. T150 is designed for the player who wants the exact precision and feel of T100 with increased, speed, distance, and forgiveness.”

3. Ping Blueprint S (7.17%)

Ping’s pitch: “Developed following extensive testing with our top tour pros to ensure control and precision, Blueprint S adds forgiveness to the mix to deliver score-lowering performance. The fully forged, 8620 carbon steel head boasts a clean cavity design and optimized CG for distance and trajectory control.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
