4-utility iron vs 4-hybrid
In our forums, our members have been pitting the 4-utility iron against the 4-hybrid. WRXer ‘J-Walker’ kicks off the discussion saying:
“I love 3W but when I get to higher lofted woods, they present so much loft that it makes me uncomfortable at address. I prefer the trajectory control and versatility of a hybrid or iron. I also prefer the shorter shaft of a hybrid or iron. 4h has been my go to for years and 4i is hit or miss for me, so I am looking at a U505 4u to see how it compares to my 4h.
For those that have not gone the high lofted FW route in this part of your bag, what have you chosen and why?”
And our members have been weighing in with their thoughts in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Ty_Guy: “I see less left to right dispersion using a long iron or utility iron. Though, my consistent carry number is better with a hybrid. When I build that spot between irons and woods, it really comes down to that: left/right consistency vs distance consistency.”
- mizuno player: “I use the Titleist 250u 4-iron. I like that I can play low pitch shots or high soft landing shots. For ME, I find the 4 utility iron more versatile.”
- Springsteennut: “I have both. The hybrid is the longer of the two. The 4U fits nicely in the gap between the 4H and the 5i.”
- stratgolf: “Hybrid – I love the concept of a DI but have never found it performs better under the gun when compared to a hybrid, particularly in respect of consistency.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

irons all the way. Distance might be better with the hybrid, but I hate how the ball kinda floats out there, very windy sometimes here. way more consistent with irons too
