GolfWRXers Discuss: Narrow sole players irons
In our forums, our members have been discussing narrow sole players irons. WRXer ‘MofoJones’ is on the hunt for a specific set of clubs, saying:
“Looking for narrow sole players irons (firm turf, shallow AoA). I play on very firm fairways and I’m looking for something with a narrow sole that gets in and out of the turf quickly.”
And our members have been sharing their top picks in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- cl001: “As another sweeper, Ping blueprint S and T are awesome and have fairly narrow soles. Not as low bounce as those you listed I don’t think but you can order them in power spec to reduce bounce if you have some launch/spin to spare (and if it wouldn’t be an offensive amount of offset).”
- PNW: “I’m pretty similar and really like S3. The new Cobra 3DP MB are really nice for this profile too. Bonus is that it will launch a touch more, good if you’re shallow and deloft a good amount. They kinda play like they’re a degree weaker than listed. Might consider T100 too.”
- is1ander: “My pick would be Cobra 3DP MB for forgiveness in a blade sole. Blueprint T, Miura Baby Blade, Vega SS are options. Artisan and National Club Works might be able to custom grind soles for ultimate turf interaction.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

The poor man’s Miura Baby Blade for only ~$300: the Cleveland 588 (Endo forged*) CB/MB combo irons. These were the last forged irons Cleveland made, as they only make wedges and putters now. Next best options would be Cobra Fly Z(+) Forged cb/mb or Amp Forged irons, Bridgestone J15 MB irons or Honma forged 717M/727M Rose Proto irons etc. There are a lot of slick deals out there on forged blades.
