Callaway unveils all-new Opus SP+ wedges

Published

on

Callaway has today introduced its all-new Opus SP+, a new extension of the brand’s Opus SP family.

Featuring a Spin Pocket construction and tungsten tour-preferred shaping with an even higher center of gravity for more spin and precision, the wedges are available at retail March 6th and are priced at $229.99 per wedge.

“Opus SP+ takes on the best qualities of Opus SP, with lower launch, more spin, and engineering control. We’ve taken the Spin Pocket and made it larger; we’ve hollowed out more of the sole and doing that allows us to put Tungsten up in the topline. We have a larger Spin Pocket than we had in Opus SP. We’ve also added even more Tungsten up top to raise the CG, which allows us to flight the ball lower for more control.” – Brian Herr, R&D Manager – Wedges

Spin Pocket Construction

Opus SP+ features a re-engineered 3-piece construction head design (Tungsten, MIM Face, Cast 8620 Body) that strategically reshapes mass to optimize CG locations – with a 25% larger Spin Pocket compared to Opus SP. The construction redistributes weight higher, raising the CG, in design to promote a more penetrating launch. The result? More spin and enhanced control, in particular for when you need to flight shots or attack tight pins.

Tungsten Weighting

Positioned on the topline of the wedge, there is 23% more tungsten in Opus SP+ compared to Opus Platinum. The tungsten works in tandem with the Spin Pocket Construction to raise the CG even higher, in a bid to generate more spin and a flighted launch – from full shots to pitches around the green.

New Spin Gen 2.0 Face

Per Callaway, this is the most advanced face in Opus history. A new 17° groove angle with tighter pitch spacing is designed to deliver more groove edge contact for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern across the face, Spin Gen 2.0 aims to offer enhanced friction for more bite and stopping power on all types of approach shots.

Shape 6 – Tour Validated Profile

Trusted by Tour players for its clean, confident look at address, Shape 6 offers precise leading edge shaping and refined sole geometry. Shape 6 is the 6th and final iteration in the Opus prototype shaping phase.

Grinds + Specs

Opus SP+ is available in Z Grind (friendly-low bounce option), a new X Grind (for maximum greenside versatility), and S Grind (for every situation). Specs are optimized with increased lob/sand wedge swingweights to D5 (D3 for Gap and PW). Shafts are True Temper DG S200, and True Temper Icon Velvet Grips.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
