Best driver head for high speed draw golfers

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the best driver heads for high speed draw golfers. WRXer ‘gentles’ tees off the thread saying:

“I’m in the process of making some swing changes to hit draws off the tee – I’m noticing my Triple diamond callaway head doesn’t quite have enough spin on it when I turn it over – sort of divebombs out of the sky.

My clubhead speed is about 105, and when i was hitting fades my spin was around 2500 – i haven’t had a chance to test out the draws on a launch monitor yet.

I’m curious what the above average speed players who hit a draw of the tee are using – I’m thinking i might have to try something slightly higher spinning like my old G400 max to keep the spin above 2000 for the odd toe ball.

I notice when I look at the WITB that the players I know who hit a draw seem to be more likely to be in the core model heads in whatever brand they’re in rather than the low spin models.”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • GMR2iron: “I’m 110; always a draw. Titleist GT2, setting C4, AD VF 5X, Pro V1x.”
  • MattM97: “I don’t always hit a draw but when I’m loose and feel good I do. I’m using the G430 LST which seems to keep spin at a good number for me.”
  • PNW: “I’m 110-115 swing speed and in a TSR3 9. I like an open face but not too flat lie angle and generally a middle CG depth head. Short list for me to try this year are Qi4D core weight in back and one or two clicks lower loft depending on head loft, then 440k and maybe even the new Wilson Max+.”

105 is NOT high speed, BARELY “above average” as you put it. At 105 worry more about your shaft than your head. The core models are spinning less especially when they can be made heavier up front.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
