What are the softest current production irons?
In our forums, our members have been discussing the softest current production irons. WRXer ‘badgergolf’ opens the debate by asking:
“Looking to see peoples’ opinions for what the softest/most buttery current production irons on the market are?
Is it the good old Mizuno? Have Srixon stollen a march? Are Miura ahead of the pack? Or have one of the other big dogs planted there flag? What does everyone think?”
And our members have been weighing in with their thoughts on the subject in response.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- bigmacpapi: “I find Srixon softer than Mizuno, especially the last several years of releases. There may be other Japanese brands that could rival but as far as big names, it’s gotta be Srixon. Miura has a totally different feel, I don’t have a lot of experience with them but they’re pretty dense/firm feeling.”
- stratgolf: “Miura feel isn’t soft, it’s more – pure? Mizuno softness is #1 for me, but haven’t hit much of the newer Srixon stuff.”
- Streuner: “Older Mizunos such as MP33 are soft. MP5 was soft also. I did not find any difference between MP5 and MP20 in feel. Wilson Staff Blades are soft feeling and forgiving for a blade.. Srixon Z forged or 985 are soft. All based on how good you are able to find the very Middle of the clubhead.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
