GolfWRXers discuss their equipment replacement cycle

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their their equipment replacement cycle. WRXer ‘ShakeyT’ kicks off the interesting subject with his own cycle, saying:

“I know this is WRX and some guys seem to buy 5 sets of everything every other month, but some of us don’t switch gear that often. What’s your normal replacement cycle by club type?

  • Driver: Despite the cost, I typically buy a new release or new prior year release every other year or so because I’ve definitely seen performance increases and new because I can’t stand to see scuffs & dings on my driver.
  • Fairways: I tend to buy a new/mint club from prior year releases about every 3 years. Cost weighs on me more with FWs than driver for some reason, so I look for a great deal on clubs who have a history of positive reviews.
  • Hybrids: I’ve had the same hybrid for 7 years & I don’t think I’ll change it unless it breaks or my swing changes to make it no longer a fit. I’ll never buy another new release now that they’re well over $300 new. Just can’t swallow paying that.
  • Irons: I used to buy off the rack, new prior year releases or mint prior year releases about every year and a half, but my current set was a new release. They are now 3 years old, so I’m in the market this year & will get fit again for a current release. The cost of irons has gone up, but for some reason it doesn’t bother me as much as the price of other clubs. Still can’t see myself buying the new 3DPs or other expensive/boutique irons though.
  • Wedges: I swap wedges every other year & always buy a new, prior year release.
  • Putters: Ugh… I used to buy a new to me putter about every 3 to 6 months and have spent up to around $400/putter. I’m still not purely settled on one & who knows when the impulse buy will get me again.”

And our members have been sharing their reactions and their own cycle in response.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • DE-ILLINI: “I stick with irons sets for a long time (3 sets in 20 years). I tend to keep drivers for about 4 to 5 years. Putters are a revolving door. No real schedule for the remaining clubs.  I usually buy one or two clubs a year.  I would love to buy more clubs, but honestly most don’t make a huge difference in my game and they are expensive. I have to budget my golf money, so I lean towards playing especially when the weather is nice.”
  • MattM97: “When I dont get along with my shafts anymore which seems to be like a 2-ish year cycle. Sometimes the head is replaced, sometimes the whole club. But it’s not the whole bag it’s kinda of an overlapping cycle.”
  • HatTrick: “I will probably look at drivers (new 2026 Titleist) this season and switch my wedges every 2-3 years.  But other than driver technology and wedge groove wear I don’t change much.  Based on my age,  I will probably look at being refitted in the next 2-3 years. When I test clubs there has to be a “WOW” factor by the trackman numbers and my own eye test… otherwise I don’t see a reason to change what works.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
