A grape thing: Sugarloaf Social Club adds purple Arrowcord grip colorway

Published

on

You’ll be hearing more from us in the near future about how the denizens of the coolest corner of golf Instagram turned full-blown golf brand, Sugarloaf Social Club, got into the grip business (it’s a helluva story)!

For now, we’re excited to bring you the news that SSC is now offering a grape colorway of its famed Arrowcord grips.

Sugarloaf’s Jack Morel offered this backstory on the grips:

“Our Arrowcord grips are inspired by the grips we remember from our earliest rounds — a nod to some of the most beloved grips in golf history, with our own little flair: our SSC arrow pointing upward alongside our ‘Play or Perish’ moniker.

“We couldn’t find what we were looking for, so we made our own. We made a brass die, chose all of our specifications all the way down to the core diameter and amount of cord, and we had some grips! We started with the most classic of colors: green, white, and yellow. Then some folks wanted grips without cord, so we made them.

“After rolling with our standard grips for a while, we heard from the midsize crowd that they wanted some, so we got to work on a midsize mold. After a few iterations, we think we’ve made them perfect, so we’ll have some midsize grips coming soon, as well.”

Morel added: “We kind of, accidentally, turned into a grip company.”

SSC’s signature Arrowcord grips are also available in Black x Green, Tour White, Canary Yellow, Royal Blue, Ghost White, Retro Green, and Red, with all colorways recently restocked.

The grips are 58R core and weigh 57 grams (Red colorway below).

Seven grips sell for $65 on the company website.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
