Dropping fairway woods from the bag
In our forums, our members have been discussing dropping fairway woods from the bag. WRXer ‘MillRiverCaddy’ has never got along with fairway woods and reaches out to fellow members for their setups when excluding the clubs on the course.

- SJP1: “Yup. Dropped 3 wood for a 13.5* BRNR Mini and dropped 5 wood for a G430 2 hybrid. I hit a decent amount of 3 woods off the tee and my miss is out the toe. The Mini handles that miss significantly better than a fairway head. Off the tee the Mini was also 7 yards longer carry, while off the deck it produced the exact same carry as my 15* OG Stealth+. All up, that made dropping 3 wood a no brainer. As for 5 wood, I enjoyed it but into a head wind it just got chewed. The G430 2 hybrid is so much more versatile.”
- Tyler724: “No fairway woods for me last couple seasons. I go from driver to a Ping G430 3 hybrid and then my irons.”
- PowerCobra98: “No fairways for me. Never get along with them and they cost me shots. Don’t have a great history with hybrids either but currently trying to make one work. I use a Mini Driver in place of a fairway woods and only hit it off a tee. As for the next club down it’s either a 3H or a 3i Utility.”
- opensupoverthere27: “I did the past two years until I just went for a fitting and hit the Titleist GT1 3Tour with an appropriate shaft (AD UB). Haven’t hit a 3 wood that high in years. Was always a driver > 2i and down guy.”
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
