3 wedge setup vs 4 wedge setup
In our forums, our members have been discussing different approaches to wedge setup. WRXer ‘achappy’ has been a 3 wedge user all his life but after noticing many pros opting for a 4 wedge setup it has made him second guess his approach, and he kicks off the thread saying:
“I’ve been a 3 wedge user my entire life. Used to be 48-54-60 and then as the lofts got stronger a 46-52-58 probably the past 15-20 years. I’ve tried 4 wedge setups (46-50-54-58) and end up switching back. Main reason is I end up rarely use the 54*. The 58* is my primary chipping/bunker club and if I need more run I’ll switch to the 52. And I got so comfortable hitting half or 3/4 shots with the 52. The 54* yardage just seemed like a rare occasion. Granted 3 wedge setup has been because I’ve stayed on sets with at least a 46* PW, mainly for this reason. I know the yardages.
But then I look at most pro WITB I see the constant 4 wedge setup so end up going down that cycle again. Just wondering who’s stuck with a 3 wedge setup?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the matter in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- AJSCHN04: “I have always had a 3 wedge setup, but I go PW GW SW. I’ve never had much need for a super high lofted wedge…. currently 43/49/55 for lofts…”
- ARSM1932: “You should never base your wedge setup on what the tour players play, several elite players including Garcia, Stenson and Lowry have also played a 46, 52 & 58 setup for most of their golfing careers so if that setup suits you then there is no need to change.”
- Conrad283: “Played today, second round of the year. I carry a 46 (135y) – 50 (125y) – 54 (115y) – 58 (105y). I used em all and love the versatility at the bottom of the bag.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Even Lowry has gone to 4 wedges now. It’s mostly for full swing distance gapping. Helps get closer more often in that key 100-150 yardage. Of course if you are not practicing these shots it won’t matter one bit.
