How do I fix this gap in my bag? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing gapping issues. WRXer ‘angler99’ has an issue with his bag, and is looking to replace his 4-iron. He’s pondering a switch to a 7-wood or 9-wood but explains his predicament, saying:
“I don’t live in an area where I can demo or get on a trackman easily. My current setup is driver, 3-wood, 19-degree, hybrid and 4-iron, PW, then three more wedges. I hate my 4-iron and want to replace it. 4-iron is 23-degrees. I don’t want to get a 7-wood if it’s as long as my 19-degree hybrid. So what do I need for proper gapping? A 21-degree 7-wood or more like a 23-degree 9-wood?
Hybrid is probably 225-235 carry. Looking for something in the 210-220 carry range.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Mobert19: “4H or 5H would work if you like hybrids. Would need to hit them all to see which one gaps the best and gives you flight you want.”
- DaveGoodrich: “I’d replace the hybrid with a 7-wood (20ish deg), and the 4-iron with a 24-ish degree hybrid (built close to your current 4-iron length). Both are more ‘point and shoot’ vs. what you are currently playing for these distances, and both are good from good lies in fairway bunkers.”
- is1ander: “If you don’t demo the Ping G440 4H, you don’t really want a solution, bro. JK but not really. It’s that good and I don’t like hybrids.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
