Spotted: Prototype Mizuno driver on the LPGA Tour
This week, GolfWRX was out at the LPGA Tour at the FM Championship to get some WITB photos from some of the players there. We know the LPGA players always have some very cool club setups and clubs in their bags, and this week they didn’t disappoint! We spotted Jiwon Jeon with this prototype driver from Mizuno in the bag with very minimal markings other than the “prototype” text near the front weight.

This new driver features three weights on the head for a good amount of adjustability. There is a weight up near the face that we would believe can be used for reducing spin when you add a heavier version there. Mizuno has added a weight far back in the head that is usually used to increase launch, spin, and forgiveness when you shift a heavier one to that spot. The final weight is down near the hosel, very close to the hosel screw, which has been traditionally used to help the play rotate the face closed at impact and get the ball started off on a more left line.
This prototype looks to be using the same Mizuno adjustable hosel system as the current driver, but the numerals “o131” are printed there. I don’t know if that is a version number or has some designation on the loft or other specs of this head. Mizuno looks to have pushed some weight back in the head, as you see that extension on the sole at the back of the head. We have seen this done on other drivers, and it is usually to help with aerodynamics and pushing weight low and back on the head to optimize stability.

From address, this prototype looks clean without any markings or alignment aids on the crown. The shape to me is a little different from the current Mizuno drivers, as the back looks to be a little more tapered and less round. The current ST models look more round and bulbous to me, and this looks a little more traditional when compared to other brands. Mizuno isn’t sharing any details on this one yet, so everything we are going on is just speculation, but it could be a good look as to where Mizuno is heading in their next driver line!

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Oh man, good to call that out and to be angry about it.
I bet the writer might commit seppuku to ask forgiveness from their family and their ancestors.
