Callaway launches all-new Opus SP wedges
Today, Callaway Golf has officially unveiled its all-new Opus SP wedges with Spin Pocket Construction.

With the new Spin Pocket, a re-engineered two-piece construction head design strategically reshapes mass to optimize CG locations. The Spin Pocket redistributes weight higher, raising the CG, in design to promote a lower, more penetrating launch. The ultimate aim is to produce more spin and control, especially when a player needs to flight shots or attack tight pins.

Per Callaway, the New Spin Gen 2.0 Face is the most advanced face in Opus history. A new 17-degree groove angle with tighter pitch spacing delivers more groove edge contact in design for more consistent spin across a variety of lies. Combined with a deeper cross-hatch laser pattern across the face, Spin Gen 2.0 produces enhanced friction for more bite and stopping power on all types of approach shots.

Opus SP is designed with Callaway’s Shape 6 profile, offering precise leading edge shaping and refined sole geometry. Shape 6 is the sixth and final iteration in the Opus prototype shaping phase.

“We know the best players in the world are chasing spin and control, and with Opus SP we’ve delivered it in a completely new way. Our new Spin Pocket strategically removes weight low and places more weight high, raising the CG to generate more spin with a controlled, consistent flight— giving players total confidence around the green.” – Zack Oakley, Sr. Manager of Product & Category Management at Callaway

Opus SP introduces progressive shaping in gap wedges to seamlessly blend with modern iron sets—creating a more cohesive setup from top to bottom. Five grind options are available – S, T, C, W and the new X Grind, which is returning by popular demand.

Available at retailers on September 12th, the wedges are priced at $199.99 (steel) and $209.99 (graphite).

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Callaway’s stuff is so ugly these last few generations and $200 for a wedge is just getting way too expensive. They’ve gone from one of my favorite brands to one that I don’t even bother with anymore.
