The role of the mini-driver – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing the role of the mini-driver. WRXer ‘johnspies’ kicks off the thread, saying:
“I’m interested in replacing my driver and 3-wood with a mini-driver. Losing a few yards but perhaps gaining a bit of accuracy is perfect for my situation plus I’d like to consolidate 2 clubs to 1 if possible. Having not hit one, are they capable of replacing a 3-4 wood from the fairway? Off the tee, I’d imagine there’s little if any difference?
I’m a 17 handicap so looking for something more consistent off the tee and willing to sacrifice some yards to stay in the fairway. Thanks in advance.”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- yakhandicap: “I switched it a 13.5 mini driver and use it off the tee. I just played 36 in Big Sky and left the driver at home (mostly because I packed some of my kid’s clubs and my driver and I are not in a positive relationship currently) and used it exclusively off the tee. Probably some of the most consistent tee shots I’ve hit. It definitely is replacing the three wood for a fairway finder off the tee.”
- robbie91: “Outside of a golfer who has a mental block with a traditional driver, I’ve never understood why someone would want to replace a 460cc head with mini-driver. If it’s the loft or shaft length in the mini driver that’s producing consistency, both can be adjusted in a 460cc head without losing any forgiveness. I do think mini driver can make sense as a 3-wood replacement for guys who primarily hit 3-wood off the tee or who are comfortable hitting the mini driver from the turf. As someone who rarely fits 3-wood into greens, I’ve been interested in tinkering with one myself.”
- kimpano: “I switched to a mini-driver this year. It’s by far the best decision I’ve made. I hit straighter and not much shorter. The advantage of mini-drivers is that you can hit more down on the ball, which in my opinion gives better results than a regular driver. I only use my mini-driver from the tee, and then my next club is a 7-wood.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
