Odyssey announces hybrid-like Chipper
Odyssey today announced its latest chipper, and according to the company, it’s their best version yet. Honestly, with respect to the technology incorporated (no, not artificial intelligence), they’re probably right.
Designed for golfers who struggle with those tricky shots just off the green, the new Odyssey Chipper aims to simplify short-game execution and help players save strokes with more reliable up-and-downs, as the clubs are wont to do.
The new model features a hybrid-like shape that’s meant to inspire confidence at address while offering improved turf interaction through a Step Sole Design — a concept borrowed from the brand’s utilities and fairway woods. This helps reduce the sole’s ground contact, promoting cleaner strikes from a variety of lies, Odyssey says.
Interestingly, engineers have elected to incorporate a polymer face insert (you know, like a putter) for soft feel at impact. Unlike a putter, however, the face includes durable grooves for consistent spin. Odyssey also added a longer grip, allowing golfers to adjust their hand position depending on the shot type and lie; important for versatility around the greens.
Offered in both men’s and women’s versions, the chipper features 37 degrees of loft and a lie angle of 66 degrees, with standard lengths of 35.5 inches (men’s) and 34.5 inches (women’s).
At retail July 27th, the Chipper will sell for $179.99.
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
