TaylorMade brings tour-inspired MG Proto wedges to the retail in limited run

Published

on

Here’s something unexpected in golf gear news for your plate the week after the U.S. Open: TaylorMade is giving everyday golfers a rare opportunity to bag a wedge previously reserved for tour professionals. The company’s MG Proto wedge, which we first spotted in play at the Memorial Tournament, is now being released in limited quantities for purchase by us, the golfing public.

That’s a tight turnaround from tour prototype to retail!

This marks a notable shift for the brand, as the MG Proto becomes TaylorMade’s first fully forged wedge under its Milled Grind umbrella. With the MG4 series nearing the end of its cycle, this new release hints at what might come next. However, TaylorMade has not confirmed if the MG Proto will evolve into the next-generation MG5. Worth noting: MG4 was released in September of 2023.

The wedges are available in two new grind options: SX and SC, both of which made immediate appearances in the bags of tour pros.

The SX grind, seen in Tommy Fleetwood’s 60-degree wedge, features the widest sole in the MG lineup. Designed to perform well in all turf conditions, it includes a pronounced sole curvature and a “Reverse-C” trailing edge that maintains consistent relief regardless of face angle. The SX grind also adds subtle offset for a more square setup at address.

On the other hand, the SC grind, used by Ben Griffin during his runner-up finish at the Memorial, offers a more cambered sole and a C-shaped grind that appeals to players looking to manipulate trajectory and shot shape with ease.

Both wedges come in a raw finish and feature TaylorMade’s laser-etched Spin Tread technology, designed to improve spin retention in moisture and rough.

The MG Proto wedges are available now through the company’s website at a retail price of $199. Each wedge comes standard with a True Temper Dynamic Gold Wedge 115g shaft and Golf Pride Z Plus 2 grip. Customization options are available. Both SX and SC grinds are offered in 58- and 60-degree lofts.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
