At what point do you decide to move to more forgiving irons? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing forgiving irons. WRXer ‘Bigjim1022’ is considering moving to more forgiving irons, writing:

“At what point do you decide to move to more forgiving irons?  Been playing some sort of forged cavity backs for years, currently ZXi7s coming from Z785’s.  While I absolutely love the look and feel of these clubs, I’m wondering if they really are helping my scores.  My Arrcos data shows 5-6 shots lost per round on approach, that seems like a lot.  For comparison, I gain strokes off the tee and give up 1 or less per round putting and short game.

I know a lot has to do with swing, but at what point do you say this is my reality, I suck with irons?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts and suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • PuffyC: “Define forgiving. I’d wager that whatever you’re thinking, a more “forgiving” iron isn’t going to fix it all else being equal. But that’s easy enough to test yourself if you can get access to a launch monitor and your GI 7 iron of choice. Just be sure to compare your misses loft for loft or based on distance only.”
  • chachang25: “As mentioned already, think it is heavily dependent on what you are doing and what you’re going for.  It sounds like you know your game well enough to know if this is a mishit/accuracy situation or if it’s a swing mechanics issue.  More forgiving irons will likely reduce your overall dispersion (certainly in the mishit/accuracy scenario), but there are real tradeoffs.  Ultimately I think you just gotta do what makes you happy – that’s playing blades for some people, and that’s playing full bag hybrids for some people.”
  • BallHooker: “The ”forgiving” cavity backs can deteriorate your ball striking. It is important to feel the shots and learn from mistakes. A better strike/stroke/swing beats ”easier” clubs any day.”

When you get tired of seeing the ball curve too much and you are too lazy to work it any more and want it to go straight LOL

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
