7-wood to 5-iron gapping – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing 7-wood to 5-iron gapping. WRXer ‘dorymcilroy’ has a conundrum and kicks off the thread saying:
“Currently I am gaming a Rogue ST Max 7-wood with a Tensei Blue 65 regular flex, I can hit it 190-200 off fairways and about 10 yards longer off the tee. My 5-iron is a T200 with a KBS Tour Graphite stiff 80g, I am hitting that around 155-160 yards, and that’s largely in line with the rest of my irons in terms of 10 yard gapping.
I’m having a lot of trouble with 165-180 yard par 3s, and I’m thinking it’s time to try a hybrid that can hit, and keep greens on those par 3s and similar approaches. I will note, I feel like im having an easier time hitting woods than the 5-iron. I’ve tried a 4 iron before and really couldn’t get a good quality strike with it. Any suggestions for a hybrid to gap there?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Ben B: “I’d consider taking the 5-iron out and adding a couple of hybrids to fill the gap. Better distance, stopping power, and easier to hit. Fred Couples longest iron is a 7, I believe.”
- JoshH: “I’ve found 5H fills the gap between 5i and 7wd nicely and I get ridiculous flight out of it also, feels like a cheat stick!”
- kamaaina1: “Agree on at least a 4H. Debating on the 9W.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

I currently have a 3 club rotation after my i210 5 iron, with two spots filled by my i210 4 iron, g425 crossover 3 iron, and a Ping G430 7 wood. I put either the i210 4 iron or g425 3 iron in play depending on the situation. Is there a long par 3 or par 5 I need the iron for? Does the course have a lot of narrow fairways that means I’m hitting more crossovers off the tee? Is the rough nasty and a 7 wood is needed to chop out?
When I but new irons this winter, I’m looking at the same gapping- 15 clubs and choose someone to sit on the bench.
