Spotted: 2025 PGA Championship bags, headcovers, and grips
Major championships are the time when manufacturers flex their creative muscle with custom staff bags, headcovers, and accessories. Every year, gear for the four major championships have a theme that expresses the course, community, or history of that chosen location. This year, the PGA Championship is being held at the iconic Quail Hollow Club in North Carolina. As you would expect, with “quail” in the name of the course, there are plenty of bird references!
Here are some of the cool custom gear we have seen down at the club.
Scotty Cameron
This one will hit a soft spot with the older crowd who spent many hours playing Nintendo’s Duck Hunt video game. Quails, Scotty Dogs, and of course the green grass they flew out of are all embroidered onto a sky blue putter grip. I love the 8-bit graphic Circle T on the flap of the mallet and side of the blade covers.

Odyssey
So many quails! Odyssey went a little more subtle with their tribute to the second major championship of the year. A light blue cover is trimmed in navy blue and then covered in quail embroidery on the top and bottom. Odyssey then put its name on the sides of the cover, and it looks like there are two different-sized mallets in order to fit some of the larger models.

L.A.B. Golf
L.A.B. Golf’s “Lab Rat” is featured on their major cover holding the famous Wanamaker trophy. We get feathers, but no birds, as L.A.B. kept it a little simpler. They have 3 sizes of head covers for their Link, OZ, Mezz, and larger DF3 models.

TaylorMade
This combination of staff bag and headcovers has a very royal and noble theme! The navy blue and gold colors go well with the crown and feathers that are integrated into the bag and covers. Even the lining inside the bag has a unique look with the white and gold checkerboard.

Callaway
Paying homage to nearby “Queen City” (Charlotte), Callaway created some very cool queen of hearts, spades, and clubs headcovers. Not sure where the diamond version might be, but the covers are also light blue and navy with plenty of stitching on them.

Super Stroke
It seems like Super Stroke has done more and more custom grips over the past few years. For this year’s PGA Championship they created a blue Tour 2.0 putter grip that features a quail wearing a crown and cape. The sides of the grip have feathers and crowns, while the very top contains the 2025 PGA Championship logo.

Cobra
Cobra decided to focus more on the strong auto racing culture around Charlotte and went with a bright teal and purple theme. The Cobra logo was done in a few different ways to look like sponsor stickers on a car, and the bag looks like a Charlotte Hornets Starter jacket from the 1990’s. The fairway cover has a checkered flag on it, and you have to love the Cobra snake on the bag with a golf ball in its mouth.

Bettinardi
The usually very creative putter company went all out with 3 different headcovers this year! The first pays tribute to the racing history of the city with a NASCAR-inspired cover, including a pin-up girl over a checkered background. The next cover gets you the quails you would expect with the classic Bettinardi Tour logo on the top. Another Charlotte Hornets Starter jacket homage cover has a very cool hornet swinging a golf club and the Bettinardi B with a star attached.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
