What is your perspective on buying golf gear? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing their perspective when it comes to purchasing golf gear. WRXer ‘wfwp’ kicks off the discussion with the following post:

“What has been your perspective when purchasing or acquiring golf gear over your golfing life? For example, was your choice dominated by personal preference, data-driven curiosity, industry hype, referrals from other golfers, or professional advice (coach, club fitter)?

For example, was your choice dominated by personal preference, data-driven, curiosity, industry hype, referral by other golfers, or professional advice (coach, club-fitter)? Please dare to elaborate.”

And our members have been sharing their approach in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • jjjgolf500: “Reviews and recs, then getting data on my own, then purchase. R7 mini yesterday was 100% personal preference, but that is super rare.”
  • Badshaft: “Marketing use to be the main tool to lure in buyers – Back before internet and data analysis flourished.  Television advertising and info mercials were king. Now with data driven reviews, I believe at least a good portion of consumers are at least educated on some aspects at some level to make a purchase. Most big box stores have gone to data driven analysis with hitting bays and launch monitors also…even if it is at lower levels.”
  • mogc60: “I just love trying new stuff. And from any brand too, well quality brands. I’ve always loved tinkering with clubs and trying new things. It’s my passion part of the game the playing part is mind torture lol.
  • badbogey: “Every time I get the itch to buy something I’ll go to the range and either a) hit my current clubs super well which makes me not want to buy clubs anymore or b) hit horribly which will mean I’ll hit it like crap even if I did get new clubs which makes me not want to buy clubs either way.

Tariff pricing should kick in with the latest iterations of drivers and irons. That should slow things down a bit for 2026 so buy now if your wife or girlfriend lets you!

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
