What piece of equipment had the biggest impact on your handicap? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the equipment that has had the biggest impact on their handicap. WRX founder ‘craz-e’ kicked off the conversation, posting:

“Was having a conversation earlier with a friend about the impact equipment can have on your scores. Thought it would be good to hear what equipment change had the biggest impact on reducing your HCP?”

And our members have been sharing their secrets in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • JermWRX: “Ping 10K driver. I shaved almost 5 strokes off of my index last year. The difference was the 10K. I would hit 2-3 tee shots out of bounds every round. That ended. Now, I might hit one out of bounds every five rounds or so, if that.”
  • Brentwood: “Getting a putter fitting. Off the rack putter (of any brand/model) versus one that has the proper length/lie/loft leads to significantly improved results (for me at least).”
  • MrCook: “7-wood and starting to mainly chip with my 54 instead of my 58. That’s what it feels like to me and my strokes gained stats with those clubs reflect that.
  • SEP1006: “For me by far it was the Autoflex Driver shaft. Been playing it since it came out. Just totally changed everything for me. Minimized my misses and good swings were easily 10 – 13 yards past the shaft I was playing before. Which was a Ventus Velocore Blue in stiff. Second was the Jumbomax Ultralight XL grips. So much easier to control the clubface. And at the time ( about 10 years ago ) picked up about 5 yards throughout the bag.”

I actually got fit for my current irons and went 1″ longer and 2* upright. I’m 6’4″ and have been playing standard irons since 2020 when I refreshed my bag. It’s crazy what seems like a small adjustment has.

My Ping Zing 2’s from ’97 were fitted to those specs, but I didn’t think it made that big of a difference.

About 20 years ago, being able to get rid of my long irons and switch to hybrid irons. That allowed me to play a solid game between 175-200 yards.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
