Best low spin driver that avoids hooky mishits? – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing drivers. WRXer ‘jjinsa’ lays out exactly what he’s looking for in a driver:

“1. On toe hits, must not give me a low spin shot that duck hooks left.  If it stays straight off the toe, even a slight draw of under 5y (I hit a fade) and still stays in the air with decent spin, I am happy. Just dont want those low duck hooks that go OB and cost me 2-3 shots.

2. I realize most low spin drivers will not give me the above, but dont want a driver that is too spinny.”

And our members have been sharing their top picks in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MountainMan: “Cobra Max-K does real well with the toe miss and keeping spin consistent. I’ve fought that low spin lefts for a long time and it has helped. It is worth trying.”
  • MyShortGameSucks: “G430 LST.   It’s not really that low spin a driver.  Maybe relative to the Ping MAX drivers its lower spin. It’s really forgiving on toe hits.”
  • DNice26: “Ping 440 LST…. You’re welcome.”

I would go with a Core model that has a front and back weight that you can flip and give a lower spin profile.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
