Epon launches new AF-307 players cavity iron
Epon might not be a brand you are familiar with, but you have probably hit some clubs that were made by their parent company, Endo. Endo is a leading forging house in Japan that is used by many equipment manufacturers for their forged irons. While forging makes great feeling irons, it is sometimes hard to create the modern shapes and designs that many golfers prefer. Epon is where Endo shows off the latest in forging technology and their precise capabilities.

Epon describes its new AF-307 irons as a players cavity back, but they are more than just a simple forged iron. To make an iron that feels soft and responsive, you need a steel that can provide that. Carbon steel, S20C to be exact, is the alloy that Epon uses and is known for its ductility while also being durable. The main body is forged, and tungsten weights are added to the toe and hosel section of the iron head to precisely move the center of gravity. Using tungsten in iron heads isn’t a new thing, but Epon is using different density tungsten to create a club that allows players to have the stability they need for mishits while still having the ability to work the ball.

Maintaining a consistent spin rate was an important element for Epon, and engineers did a lot of testing with face and groove designs. A new laser face milling is used between the grooves to help create spin rates that don’t fluctuate when moisture is present. This is most noticeable in the short irons, 8-PW, where the spin would drop off more dramatically when the face, ball, or turf are wet.

Epon also enhanced the shaping of the iron heads from the AF-306 model they replace. The AF-307 feature a slightly taller face height that will look more proportionate and give players more confidence at address. The topline was also massaged to make it look lower near the hosel for a look that more players liked.

Epon AF-307 irons are available for fittings now at authorized dealers.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
