“The design features the superior Pertex Shield Stretch technology with a smooth ‘slide and glide’ interior to reduce friction with garments underneath; front pockets to keep hands dry; chest width tabs for extra comfort and protection; plus adjustable cuffs and shaped sleeves for the perfect fit and easy movement. The standout new color combinations for this season include the striking Navy/Moonlight and Black/Fresh Green options.”

Larry“Weighing less than a sleeve of golf balls at just 113g, the all-new Larry windproof and water-resistant jacket delivers best-in-class lightweight performance and ultimate packability for golfers seeking a super technical half-zip wind top. The advanced Interface-1 fabric ensures incredible breathability and extreme stretch for easy movement during the swing, as well as a protection from light rain and wind. It is available in three colors – Moonlight Blue, Navy and Black – for the season.”

Our Take on Galvin Green’s Ames and Larry jackets

The Ames

Based on our testing and personal use, Galvin Green has long been the standard for wind and rainwear. Made from a 100 percent waterproof, windproof fabric, Galvin Green’s Ames jacket is the brand’s stretchiest jacket that they’ve ever made. Allowing for maximum breathability and flexibility, the Ames jacket is exactly what golfers want to have on to battle the elements out on the course without feeling restricted.

At the heart of the Ames jacket’s design is its impressive Pertex Shield 3-layer stretch technology. This advanced fabric incorporates a hydrophilic polyurethane (PU) membrane, which effectively attracts and retains water molecules. This unique feature results in a soft and flexible 3-layer fabric that enhances comfort and performance while navigating the course. Again, softness and flexibility — much better than the opposite!

The jacket is equipped with a variety of practical features tailored for optimal performance. Every detail has been considered. It includes adjustable chest tabs that enhance comfort during your swing, cuffs with elastic for a snug fit, and a touch-and-close fastener for easy adjustments. The side seam has been strategically repositioned to minimize friction, while the elastic drawstring hem and adjustable cuffs provide a customizable fit.

Made from ISO-tested fabric, the jacket features a PFC-free water repellent treatment, ensuring you stay dry in unpredictable weather. Its “slide and glide” interior design allows for effortless on-and-off wear, even when layered underneath.

For golfers dedicated to facing the elements — the “mudders” among us — this rain jacket is an essential addition to your gear.

The Larry

Whether you play in a downpour or head back to the clubhouse at the first sign of a drizzle, every golfer needs a good layer of wind protection, which is where the Larry jacket comes in. This Interface-1 half zip windbreaker by Galvin Green weighs in at less than a sleeve of golf balls, making it the lightest jacket in the brand’s collection and an ideal option for those who carry their golf bags.
Heck, it weighs in at just 113 grams, and it can be easily folded and stored in your pocket for on-the-go use. Just an incredibly convenient feature.

Constructed from breathable and stretchy fabric, it features a water-repellent finish, making it ideal for various weather conditions. In addition, the Larry is crafted from Bluesign-approved fabric, meaning it’s a sustainable choice — always a plus!

This jacket features stretch material and an elastic drawstring at the waist for a customizable fit and is super comfortable when worn over a golf shirt, which is non-negotiable for us.

At the end of the day, if you’re looking for a high-quality windbreaker that is ultra-lightweight, then the Larry jacket is for you.

Additionally, GolfWRX’s Resident Club Junkie, Brian Knudson, put the Ames Jacket through the paces — both on course and running down the block to pick up dinner in the rain. BK was impressed, and he discusses the jacket in the episode of Club Junkie below.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
