BK says: This whole concept of building the wildest set of Mizuno irons came to life down at the PGA Show this year. While visiting the Mizuno booth on a rainy demo day, I got to talking with a few folks, including Mizuno’s Chris Voshall. We were talking about the new JPX 925 Forged irons and the topic of what finish looks better came up. A few of us debated what was better and then I asked:

“What if you could do both somehow?”

Many ideas flowed from half of the heads being one finish to alternating between the black and chrome versions. From there, I took it a little further and wanted to really make this a wild set of irons that would still look really cool! So I put together a spreadsheet and laid out an alternating head, shaft, and grip setup that I thought would look really good when all put together. The heads start with a chrome 4-iron and then alternate down to a black finish gap wedge. Shafts are the True Temper Dynamic Gold Mid 115 that utilize chrome versions with the black heads and gunmetal with the chrome heads. Grips finish off the build with the Golf Pride MCC in blue on the gunmetal shafts and the black and grey models on the chrome shafts.

I never expected them to actually look as good as they do, and I think I will have no problem playing these irons without any distraction!.

Wasted time. Thanks for taking 3 minutes of my life that I shall NEVER be able to recover. AWESOME iron, foolish notion. When you get another idea such as this one, please let it go.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
