TaylorMade introduces 5th-generation P790 irons for 2025

Published

on

Today, TaylorMade has unveiled the latest generation of its P790 irons, which replace the 4th generation (2023) of the popular players distance model. As GolfWRXers well know from our annual Best Irons and Members Choice results, P790 have been dominant performers in the players distance category (and, indeed, are often credited with creating the category). With the latest iteration, Matt Bovee and company introduced advancements in face technology, materials, and weight distribution to enhance performance, feel, and consistency.

2025 TaylorMade P790 irons: What’s new, key technology

New face material for increased speed

The P790 irons feature a forged 4340M face material, which is 20-percent stronger than previous iterations, allowing for a thinner and faster face. The material change contributes to up to a 24-percent larger sweet spot in comparison to the previous P790 model, promoting more consistent distance across the set.

“P790 continues to be a special iron that offers something for a wide array of player demographics. Now in their fifth generation, P790 irons continue to be a global leader in the Players Distance category. In fact, they created the Players Distance category, and this latest generation continues to lead the way.” – Matt Bovee, Global Category Director – Irons and Wedges

Individual head optimization for improved feel

TaylorMade employed T-modal analysis to optimize sound and feel by controlling frequency vibrations in each iron head. Internal stiffening structures were implemented to enhance sound quality without compromising the performance.

“Our goal with P790 irons was to take sound and feel to the next level. We were able to accomplish that through individual head optimization and the stiffening of key internal structures while maintaining the world-class performance P790 irons are known for.” – Matt Bovee

FLTD CG technology

The P790 irons again incorporate the company’s FLTD CG technology, which positions the center of gravity progressively through the set:

  • Long irons: CG is placed low for higher launch and better playability.
  • Mid irons: Tungsten weighting (up to 40g) moves toward the toe to increase stability and MOI.
  • Short irons: No tungsten use, allowing CG to sit higher for greater control.

Additional technology

Thick-Thin Back Wall Construction: Removes excess weight from above the strike zone, redistributing mass for optimized performance in each club.

Thru-Slot Speed Pocket (4- 7-irons): Expands the sweet spot and preserves ball speed, especially on low-face strikes.

SpeedFoam Air: Injected into the hollow body design for enhanced feel and sound.

Player-Centric Design Enhancements

P790 irons feature a player-preferred slimmer topline and refined sole radius for improved turf interaction. Additionally, the P790 logo placement is centered on the back of the clubhead for visual consistency with the P-Series lineup. Also, TM incorporated a Tour Satin Scratch finish with a machined texture for a premium aesthetic.

Saying that “lofts” are 4i through AW is fine, but what I’d like to know is what are the loft numbers in degrees for each iron. How strong is the PW, and what are the gaps?

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
