2025 Ping G440 drivers: GolfWRX Launch Report

Published

on

What you need to know: Ping substantially refined the cosmetics of its flagship driver line with new G440 drivers. These don’t look like G430, G425, etc. The lowest center of gravity (CG) in company history and more speed are the key storylines for these sleeker-looking Ping woods. As is standard from Ping: Max, LST, and SFT models make up the family.

Ping G440 drivers: What’s new, key technology

Cumulative weight savings = lowest CG in Ping driver to date

Carbonfly Wrap crown technology is utilized in all three models, allowing engineers to distribute weight throughout the club, aiding in lower CG.

Shallow face design delivers a more flexible, hotter, thinner face, particularly in the high-heel area, where players commonly mis-hit.

Free Hosel technology: Engineers saved four grams from the hosel region, allowing them to redistribute weight for more optimal CG.

Lighter, longer stock shaft: The standard shaft length was increased by one-quarter of an inch to 46 inches in Ping’s Alta CB Blue shaft and to 45.5 inches in the Ping Tour 2.0 and stock aftermarket options to aid players in generating more clubhead speed.

2025 Ping drivers: Additional model details

Ping G440 Max

The most forgiving model in the lineup, this 460cc design features a three-position, 29-gram weight in the rear of the club.

Ping G440 LST

The low-spin driver also features a 29-gram rear weight in a 450cc design targeting faster swing speed players.

Ping G440 SFT

Ping’s draw-biased, anti-slice driver features two weight positions, Draw and Draw+, along with a 23-gram back weight. SFT is available in 9-degree loft for the first time.

What Ping says

“Our pursuit of helping golfers play better and enjoy the game more advances to an even higher level with the introduction of the G440 family,” said John K. Solheim, Ping CEO & President. “Through multiple technologies across all the product categories, the next generation of our ‘G’ franchise is delivering more speed and more distance while ensuring the forgiveness expected from every Ping club. The powerful combination of distance and forgiveness yields maximum performance when golfers are properly fitted. We see that every day in our testing, and we’re excited to get the G440 into the hands of golfers so they can enjoy the same benefits.”

“The tour adoption of the drivers and fairway woods has been exceptional,” Solheim said. “The G440 LST driver was used to win its first official week on tour and we’re seeing more in play around the world every week. Our tour players appreciate the added ball speeds and continually comment on the great sound and look. Like all golfers, they are in search of more speed and optimized launch conditions, and they are happy to find it in new equipment.” – John K. Solheim

“One of the key design themes throughout the G440 driver family is ‘optimization. That includes everything from the head size and shape to ensuring each model fits a specific player profile. Our team took a measured approach to ensure each model provides a fitting solution for every golfer. The MAX fits every skill level, from Tour players to higher handicaps, whereas the SFT and LST allow fitters to further dial in a result that best fits a golfer’s needs. It’s an exciting opportunity for golfers to hit longer and straighter drives, and we look forward to putting the G440 drivers to the test in the fitting environment. We’re confident they will win a lot of the head-to-head comparisons.” – John K. Solheim

I’ve tried several Ping drivers with the Alta CB shaft. I was prepared to hate them. Instead, I really liked them.

I’ve owned a couple of Pings with stock “Tour” shafts. They were very different from the Alta – almost diametrically opposite – but still very high quality.

    Questions:
    1. Does Ping say (as they have in the past) that the newest-color Alta is the same as the previous-color Alta?
    2. Did I miss it, or is there any description of how the 440 head sounds compared to presvious G400-series drivers?

Garbage stock shafts. It’s a fortune to get a decent shaft.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
