Cleveland launches HiBore XL drivers

Published

on

The HiBore is back. Cleveland Golf today announced all-new HiBore XL drivers, this time with what the company calls a “modern twist.” No, it’s not another incarnation of the iconic scooped-back crown of yore, instead, HiBore XL drivers are triangular!

The triangular chassis is designed not only to increase moment of inertia/forgiveness, but Cleveland also says the design delivers greater distance and better/sound feel than has historically been found in three-pointed driver designs.

“As our R&D research has developed hand in hand with advancements of our A.I. simulation capabilities, the realization came that removing the constraints of a ‘traditional’ looking Driver shape would allow for new and exciting performance opportunities,” said Casey Shultz, Senior Product Manager at Cleveland Golf. “By taking advantage of the unique HiBore philosophy of a performance first design, we were able to unlock levels of forgiveness and distance that weren’t possible before. But there is one key difference with the new model compared to that of the past.. it also sounds great!”

HiBore XL drivers, with their triangular chassis, are tailored for forgiveness, distance, and sound, according to the company. Cleveland engineers leaned on A.I. simulations to precisely tweak the chassis’ shape and weight distribution to achieve performance and sound characteristics. Compared to Launcher XL 2, the HiBore XL features a 19 percent larger sweet spot on its A.I.-optimized MainFrame XL face, making off-center hits less penal. Per Cleveland, the face is 10 percent larger than the average driver face.

Engineers incorporated new ActivWing technology at the heel of the crown for enhanced consistency by providing more stability in the downswing for greater consistency.

HiBore XL drivers feature 12 grams of adjustable weight at the rear of the club and a 1.5-degree adjustable hosel. Cleveland continues its Action Mass CB technology, by which an eight-gram weight is positioned in the end of the shaft lighter feel and greater stability, according to Cleveland, as well as the potential for more swing speed.

Additionally, engineers increased crown and sole stiffness, which works in combination with internal ribbing, for improved sound at impact.

Also to note: Cleveland is offering HiBore XL Lite, a lighter-weight, draw-biased option.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
