Spotted: Prototype Cleveland wedges at the Shriners
There is a lot of excitement out there at the 2024 Shriners Children’s Open this week and this new Cleveland wedge is up near the top of the list. Labeled RTZ, this new Cleveland wedge has a very clean and elegant look to it. We would have to guess that the big story that will come out about these wedges is the Z-Alloy (maybe ZZ-Alloy?), stamped on the hosel, that is being used. No idea what its composition is as Cleveland isn’t giving out the full details yet and will only confirm the design as a prototype.
We can also see the use of some laser etching on the face between the grooves that should help improve spin. The texture isn’t easy to see but it looks like there is more of it than on the curent RTX6 Zipcore wedges. From our photos it also looks like Cleveland is still using the Full, Mid, and Low sole options to give golfers plenty of options to match their wedge to their swing, conditions, and type of shots they like to hit.
The shaping is very classic Cleveland with a slightly higher and squared-off toe section of the wedge. A straighter leading edge is in place on even the higher lofted wedges for a clean look. Being Tour Rack wedges we would assume they are raw, non-plated, steel that will rust and patina as you play them. No word yet on what other finishes might be available in the future.

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
