Cobra announces King Black Edition irons

Published

on

The same week that Rickie Fowler put Cobra’s King Black Edition Tour irons in play at the Sanderson Farms Championship, the company is bringing the model, along with King Black Edition CB and MB irons to retail.

Cobra is giving the irons a black DBM (Diamondized Black Metal) finish, which it calls its most durable, sun-diffusing black satin finish.

“Cobra was on a mission to create the most durable black finish on the market,” said Jose Miraflor, Vice President Product Architecture & Consumer Connections at Cobra said. “These are not just irons; they are a statement. Proof of our intent to not only create the highest performing technologies in the game, but the most visually and aesthetically pleasing.”

You can read more about the design of Cobra’s King Tour irons and its 5-step forging process in our launch piece.

Cobra King Black Edition Tour irons

Cobra touts its King Black Edition Tour irons as offering “soft feel and playability with enhanced distance and forgiveness.” TPU material-filled, aluminum medallion-topped progressive CNC undercuts in the back cavity of the irons allowed engineers to reposition weight for improved launch and more forgiveness on off-center hits.

  • Available in 3-iron through gap wedge. Stock set is 4-PW in RH (LH custom).
  • Limited edition all-black Lamkin Crossline grip and limited edition KBS $-Taper steel shafts with black PVD finish in stiff flex are standard
  • $1,399 for a seven-piece set

Cobra King Black Edition CB, MB irons

Cobra’s most compact design in the King lineup, King Black Edition CB, MB irons feature “thinner toplines, minimal offset, thinner soles, and shorter blade lengths for enhanced shot-shaping ability,” according to the company.

CB irons, of course, are a more forgiving cavity back design with more offset, while MB irons are a traditional muscle back design.

  • Stock set is CB 4- 6-irons and MB in 7-PW
  • 3-iron through gap wedge are available custom in both CB and MB
  • Limited edition all-black Lamkin Crossline grips and limited edition KBS $-Taper steel shafts with black PVD finish come standard
  • $1,299 for a seven-piece set

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
