Stix Golf goes multi-material with new Compete driver

Published

on

Stix Golf has been making quality golf clubs at a more affordable price point for a little while now. From individual clubs to complete sets, they have something for the golfer looking to keep some money in their pocket without sacrificing performance. Now, Stix has pushed the performance line a little further out with the new Compete driver.

The Compete driver is definitely something a little different from a direct-to-consumer brand like Stix. It isn’t easy making good-performing drivers at almost half the cost of the dominant brands in the space. For the Compete driver, they moved away from all titanium construction and added a carbon fiber crown. Carbon fiber is lighter than titanium while still being strong enough to support the structure of the driver head for great performance.

The face and body of the Compete are traditional titanium and built around the Stix minimalist design. On the top of the club is a topline that is titanium and then a carbon fiber insert on the crown. Stix lets you see the carbon weave and then the sides fade to a gloss black that looks high-end but isn’t too distracting, even in bright sun.

Adjustability has become commonplace in the driver market. Accordingly, Stix added an adjustable hosel to the Compete driver. Out of the box the Compete can be played from 8 to 10 degrees of loft but simply rotating the shaft and tightening the hosel screw. The standard loft is 9 degrees with a 60-degree lie angle, but they do offer flatter lie angles as you change lofts. The adjustment is simple and easy to use so you don’t need an engineering degree to figure it out.

The Compete is finished off with an upgraded graphite shaft that is made with high-modulus carbon fiber. The stiff flex comes in at 60 grams and plays a little on the softer side when compared to other stiff flex shafts. A soft and tacky rubber grip is installed that has small, round perforations on it.

The Stix Compete driver was available a few weeks ago but sold out very quickly. They just replenished their stock but it looks like they could go pretty fast again, so don’t wait to long to pull the trigger. The Stix Compete driver is available in right-hand only at the moment and has a $379 price tag.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
