What are the GOAT Ping irons? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing Ping irons. WRXer ‘nicki_01’ reaches out to our members with a simple question:
“What are some of the best models in your opinion and why?”
And WRXers have been staking a claim for their favorites in our forum.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Remon: “This thread will be filled with praise for the Eye2s. I think I read somewhere that they are the best selling iron model of all time? I’m to young to have played them during their launch, but I have a set at home. But my personal favorite are the S56s. Played those from the release until 2020. Tried the iBlades, tried the iE1s always found my way back to the S56s. The slightly less chrome look and the way it framed the ball for me just made me full of confidence. Switched to the Blueprints in 2020 and as I play less and less I switched to the i230s last autumn for that extra forgiveness. But the S-line was awesome, you will most likely get a response for each model that was released.”
- bluedot: “Put the Eye2 in a separate category. There’s never been anything else like that in the history of golf equipment. Beyond that, in Ping’s long history two that really stood out in their day from anything else on the market were the i5 and the i20. Lots of other Ping sets were and are great, but those two were truly special at the time.”
- rsballer10: “It’s objectively the Eye2. It’s subjectively whatever iron was your favorite. The GOAT has to be the iron that brought perimeter weighting to the masses.”
- tets: “Eye 2s changed the game and are great…but for the s55s are the best performing irons of all time. Just got a mint set and am going to reshaft!”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
