Rory McIlroy says he’ll “probably” put a new driver in play this week

Published

on

Die-hard GolfWRXers connected the dots quickly.

The facts:

  • The TaylorMade Qi10 LS appeared on the USGA’s conforming driver head list Monday
  • Rory McIlroy is in action this week at the season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai
  • McIlroy has already locked up his fifth Race to Dubai title

Ergo, McIlroy would relish the opportunity to see if he could level up his off-the-tee game even further (the Ulsterman was second in strokes gained: off the tee in 2022-2023).

It’s anything but surprising, then, that McIlroy has been practicing with the club and told the DP World Tour social media team, “You’ll probably see a new driver in the bag this week.”

“I still want to go out there and try to win the golf tournament, but it could be a good time to test it out in competition,” McIlroy said of the new TaylorMade Qi10 LS driver.

We’ll have to wait until Thursday’s opening round at Jumeirah Golf Estates to see if McIlroy does in fact put the club through its competitive paces.

One final note: McIlroy looks to have equipped the Qi10 LS with the same Fujikura Ventus TR Blue shaft he gamed in his TaylorMade Stealth 2 Plus driver.

A photo of the Qi10 LS from the USGA’s conforming list is below.

SO tired of TM and Callaway coming out with new products it seems like every other month. An average golfer who scores 110 think he/she needs to trade up all the time. And the club they recently purchased is worth 1/4 of what they paid for it. Ridiculous. i compete in long drive, have 11 drivers, and 6 are older than 2010…and still amazing.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
