Spotted: Jared Wolfe’s prototype Odyssey Toulon Chicago putters (knuckle necks!)

Published

on

We have seen a few “knuckle neck” putters on tour this year and it looks like Jared Wolfe is testing out two of them this week at the Korn Ferry’s Nationwide Children’s Championship. Both putters are Odyssey Toulon Chicago heads with a new neck installed to reduce the amount of toe hang, getting them a little closer to face balanced.

For the skilled people at Odyssey, I doubt this conversion was difficult as the Chicago head has a post that a double bend shaft goes over standard. The team probably bent the post to sit up at 90 degrees and then installed the steel tubing and L-neck portion. This style neck makes it easy to adjust the neck length in order to dial in the perfect amount of toe hang that the player desires. From address, it isn’t distracting and looks just like a traditional plumbers neck.

The first Chicago is finished in black and features a single sightline on the flange of the putter. This model also goes with the traditional Toulon Deep Diamond Mill face that should offer a softer feel and sound.

The silver-finished putter moves its site line to the topline of the putter, leaving the flange naked. This putter’s face has a very smooth milling pattern that should offer a firmer feel and more crisp sound on impact.

Both putters are using a Grasen Ultimate grip, with a green version on the black putter and the silver with a blue grip. These putters look to be shafted up with steel shafts and not the popular Odyssey Stroke Lab graphite-and-steel shaft.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
