Spotted: Denny McCarthy’s new TaylorMade iron setup (P770, P730 combo)
Denny McCarthy showed up to the 2023 Valspar Championship with a few new irons in the bag. The new irons are a unique combo set of TaylorMade’s brand new P770 irons and discontinued P730 forged blades.
The setup is a Titleist U500 4-iron that carries over, a 5 and 6-iron in the P770, 6-9 irons in the P730, and a Titleist Vokey SM7 48-10F as the pitching wedge.
I am personally a big fan of combo iron sets as it gives the golfer what they need in the long and short irons that a single set can’t do. It is just unique to see brand new 2023 P770 irons paired up with a set of P730 irons that were released in 2017.
There is a 6-iron from each set in the bag, not sure if he is still deciding on what one will get the start or both are used due to loft or distance gapping. The current P770 6-iron comes with a stock loft of 29 degrees where the P730 is 31 degrees, but the P770 does have the thinner and hotter face. Either of these can be bent to Denny’s desired loft, but we don’t know if any adjustments have been made.
The irons are shafted with True Temper Dynamic Gold 120 Tour Issue X100 shafts and feature Golf Pride Tour Velvet grips.

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.
“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
