GolfWRX’s most-read equipment stories of the year
It’s that time of year, GolfWRXers, when we take a backward glance at some of the best content published over the past 12 months.
As 2023 approaches, we’re counting down the 10 most-read equipment stories of the year on GolfWRX. And after much internal discussion and impassioned debate (read: my editorial whims), we’ve decided to include WITB articles in the list.
But you didn’t come here to read an intro from the EIC, so let’s get to the list.
10. TOUR REPORT: This dominant PGA pro is using hybrids (and irons) from 11 years ago
In February, our tour reporter Andrew Tursky filed a look at the incredible clubs South Florida PGA Hall of Famer Alan Morin’s had in play.
9. Best driver 2022: Most forgiving driver

No surprise here, but GolfWRXers were keenly interested in our Best driver: Most forgiving shortlist.
8. Best fairway woods of 2022: By expert club fitters for you!
Eighth on our list is our expert panel of fitters’ picks for the best fairway woods of the year.
7. Justin Thomas WITB 2022 (January)

JT’s sticks from January were of great interest to GolfWRXers.
6. Rory McIlroy WITB 2022 (February)
Rory’s adoption of Stealth woods and MG3 wedges brought plenty of eyeballs to his February WITB.
5. John Daly says this is the modern-day piece of golf equipment that changed everything

Whenever JD offers his opinion, it’s of interest to the golf audience at large. This take was a good one.
4. Cameron Smith’s winning WITB: 2022 Players Championship
Cam Smith’s Titleist gear from The Players Championship comes in fourth on our list.
3. ‘Tiger was paying attention…even if the world wasn’t’ – Chamblee hits back at former major champ’s Woods ball claim

Cool story here in which Brandel Chamblee offers his opinion in the “significance of Tiger Woods’ golf ball in 2000” debate.
2. Bettinardi issues statement after putters appear on shelves in Costco
Arguably the most unexpected equipment story of the year/on our list: When Bettinardi putters started showing up on the shelves of a discount retailer, the folks in Tinley Park had to put out a message.
1. Best driver 2022: Expert club fitters recommend the best driver for you

No surprise here: topping the list is the fruit of 1,000s of fittings conducted by our expert panel of fitters: Best driver 2022.
Happiest of holidays and absolute best wishes for you and your families in the year ahead!

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
