SPOTTED: PXG “0317 ST” milled blade prototype irons at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage

Published

on

PXG offers a range of irons for different skill levels, but it’s the “ST” (Super Tour) blade-style irons that are the most widely used on the PGA Tour.

On Tuesday at the 2022 Rocket Mortgage Classic, GolfWRX spotted PXG “0317 ST Milled 3X Forged” prototype irons in Henrik Norlander’s bag. Norlander said he’s been playing the irons for three weeks.

Here’s the rest of what Norlander told GolfWRX on Tuesday at Detroit Golf Club:

“They have a little bit more bounce than the old ones. [PXG] presented them to me that these are the new blades. I tried ’em and put ’em in. They go through the turf a lot better. I’m pretty steep. I love the way they look. They look really good…a little more offset. I like that. That’s what I like. [Offset is] normally pretty hard to get, because when you get the offset out, you add bounce, usually. They are really good. I mean, I love the old ones, but these are really good.”

The most notable differences we can see when analyzing the irons are, of course, the milling marks all over the back portion of the clubs, but also the nomenclature. Typically, PXG reserves its “0317” numbers for hybrids, whereas the irons have historically been named with “0311.” In military terms, 0311 is code for a United States Marine Corps infantry rifleman, while 0317 is a U.S. Marines Scout Sniper.

Norlander’s irons are stamped with “0317 ST” on the hosels.

Very interesting.

We’ll be on the lookout for more information and details from PXG on these new irons. Until then, check out more photos and conversation around the irons in our GolfWRX Forums.

He played on the Hawaii Pacific University Men's Golf team and earned a Masters degree in Communications. He also played college golf at Rutgers University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
