Best “non-tour” golf ball

1. TaylorMade Tour Response

What TaylorMade says: “The Tour Flight Dimple Pattern unlocks next-level aerodynamics while promoting maximum carry distances. This Tour-proven technology, which is found in TP5/TP5x, has been added to Tour Response for the first time.”

From our launch piece: “The 2022 Tour Response also features Speedmantle with HFM (High Flex Modulus). A firmer second layer surrounding the inner low compression core is designed to help the ball explode off the face with increased face interaction maximizing energy transfer at impact to produce faster ball speeds.”

You can read what other golfers are saying  in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

2. Srixon Q-Star

What Srixon says: “Featuring Spin Skin with Slide-Ring Material, the new Q-STAR offers unprecedented greenside spin performance. Spin Skin with SeRM digs deep into Wedge and Iron grooves, dramatically increasing friction and maximizing spin for more stopping power on every shot.”

From our launch piece: “The new Q-Star shares technology with Srixon’s Z-Star Series but is packaged into a two-piece, ionomer construction.”

You can read what other golfers are saying  in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

3. TaylorMade Tour Response Stripe

What TaylorMade says: “360° ClearPath Alignment was engineered with the golfer in mind. This next-gen visible technology of Tour Response Stripe wraps around the center of the golf ball to help you aim putts better, faster and more consistently, all while providing immediate feedback on the quality of your roll. A lime yellow finish offers enhanced visibility.”

From our launch piece: “By drawing inspiration from the PIX design with ClearPath Alignment technology, TaylorMade engineers brought the 360 degree alignment to Tour Response in design to offer the easiest golf ball to align that they’ve ever made.”

You can read what other golfers are saying  in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

4. Titleist Tour Speed

What Titleist says: “If you’re looking for long distance, a penetrating flight and shot stopping control into the green, we’ve got you covered with Titleist Tour Speed. Like the name says, Tour Speed is very fast, but low scores require more than speed and Tour Speed is designed to help you execute every type of shot. All with the quality and consistency you trust from Titleist.”

From our launch piece: “The Tour Speed ball features a reformulated 1.550 core that is designed to deliver high speeds and a proprietary high flex casing layer, uniquely designed for this golf ball to maintain low long game spin.”

You can read what other golfers are saying  in the GolfWRX forums, and see our launch piece here.

5. Wilson Triad, Bridgestone e12 Contact

What Wilson says: “Triad’s high MOI design moves weight from the core to the outer layers of the golf ball resulting in faster ball speed and lower driver spin for a more stable ball flight and more fairways hit. The ultra-thin cast urethane cover engages longer with the clubface on mid-to-low irons, generating controlled ball flight and greater spin to attack pins with confidence.”

What Bridgestone says:  “The true game-changer is a new CONTACT Force dimple, which features a unique structure with a raised area in the center and an outer portion that slows horizontal rotation during flight. The raised area allows for 38% more contact with the clubface at impact than traditional dimples, yielding a much more efficient transfer of energy and improved core activation. The result is faster ball speed and straight distance with every club in the bag.”

I’d give the e-12 a thumbs down, Tour Response, love the full stripe. and if it is not the Pro V1 never found any Titlist ball worthy of the name…

Just out of curiosity, what are the differences between the TM Response and TM Response Stripe, outside of the stripe, that would constitute the Response be listed twice?

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
