If your livelihood depended on lower scores, what clubs are you using? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing a hypothetical scenario that requires low scores. WRXer ‘CHouls19’ presents everyone with the interesting and daunting scenario, saying:
“I’m talking purely functional, not aesthetic. The clubs that you would use if you had to make money from golf?”
Our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum and even discussing what manufacturer they would likely sign with.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Flip4000: “Ping S55 irons. Good balance of control and forgiveness.”
- rwhitlock: “For me, it would be any club that has the most forgiveness that I can still spin. Currently I game the T100’s (not the newest version), and I’ve shot 66 in a state tourney, and I’ve also shot 85 in a state tourney. So, not so sure that a club is going to make the biggest difference. It will come down to your swing fundamentals and how well you can repeat your swing. Also, the mental side is way more important than clubs. If you’re mentally strong and could take the pressure of playing for a living, then the irons really don’t matter. Just my opinion…”
- BassCatchr77: “For sure would have Taylor made tour preferred MC 2011 irons in the bag.”
- BallerNate: Very interesting question. My top choice for signing a contract would be the following: 1) TaylorMade 2) Srixon. Because those are the manufacturers whose equipment I prefer. But if Callaway, Titleist, PING, or any other OEM was paying me, I could get equipment adjusted to my specs that would absolutely work! I like my current bag a lot…just need more testing on my SIM2 Driver to get it dialed in, will be testing a Driving Iron to knock out one of my Hybrids, and will test a different Iron set over the Winter to see if it can knock out my ZX7’s (doubtful).”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

If you have been fitted for your clubs, you should already be playing the clubs you should be able to shoot the lowest scores with.
