‘Best wedges (and general advice) for a terrible bunker player?’ GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing the most effective wedges from the bunker.

WRXer ‘OspreyCl’ says he has been working hard on his bunker game but is still finding it very difficult. Beyond the obvious answer of more practice/lessons, he asks fellow members for their suggestions on wedges that could help, with WRXers providing their picks in our forum as well as technique and spec pointers.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Tax77: “Less loft, more bounce, scoop it out.”
  • Nessism: “The Eye 2 cup sole design wedges are magic out of the sand. Maybe the best ever sole design for that purpose.”
  • Davidv: “Just get a Callaway Sure Out2, and your bunker problems are a thing of the past.”
  • jdcadkin: “I have used both a Vokey K and D grind with success. But the absolute goat out of the bunker is the TM Hi-Toe Bigfoot. 100% automatic.”
  • dlow206: “I have always been a terrible bunker player. I have even used the Cleveland wedge (forgot the name) that is similar to the Callaway Sure Out. Then I got fitted for the Edel SMS T-Grind. I didn’t really make much change to my technique, and I became a decent bunker play. I recently had a club building mishap (long story) and wrecked the head on the Edel. I’ve bought some other wedges since and haven’t changed my technique really since the Edel, and now I am back to being a pretty crappy bunker player.”

Personally love the PM Grind 19 60° as my greenside bunker club, but the Kirkland 52/56° for the rest. The PM Grind has such a large face, you don’t feel like you can miss. The confidence boost is huge. Just open the face a little, and a nice solid swing will get you out of most bunkers.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
