Does ‘blade shaming’ exist? – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing “blade shaming” in golf. WRXer ‘Fairway14’ kicks off the thread, asking whether fellow members agree that blade shaming exists, saying in part
“A few months ago, longtime blade user Ricky Fowler put in his bag a set of cavity back irons. My guess is that he was tired of the eye rolls from people who looked in his bag after he missed a cut.
Have you or someone you know been shamed out of playing muscle back blade irons? Do you agree that blade shaming is a real thing?”
And our members have been sharing their thoughts in our forum, with plenty of different opinions being held.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- ohioglfr: “I don’t have enough ego to be “club shamed”, and I feel sorry for anyone that would feel that way, regardless of handicap. Hit what works best for you and critics be damned . . . real or imagined.”
- Pepperturbo: “Blade shaming exists, unfortunately for Golf, weasels that can’t hit the ball, lead the pack, and some of them exist on Golfwrx. Though recently NOT as vocal. I wouldn’t give a plugged nickel for any of them.”
- craz-e: “Far from it in my opinion…..Everyone who I play with loves to see a set of blades in the bag, and after offering them the option of hitting them, most are surprised how they really aren’t any harder to hit than what they are possibly gaming, but everyone always comments on wow don’t they feel good.”
- NHenson815: “I could be wrong, but the “shaming” is probably just a forums/social media thing. As a bad golfer, I’ve certainly received my share of suggestions that I should try something a bit more forgiving than my iblades or Miura MC-501s, but nothing I would consider “shaming”. For whatever reason, the game improvement irons just don’t seem to agree with me, but maybe anything takes time to get used to, so I am giving the Apex DCB a shot.”
- Golfjack: “I think I’m more likely to joke about playing with shovels than blades. But then again, if said friend with the MBs is hitting worm burners with a 9 iron blade, I’d shame him into changing for sure. A stranger, he can do whatever the heck he pleases. As long as he doesn’t slow us down too much.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Hot take….you will get better performance and scores from a non bladed iron. You are not special and you do not hit blades better.

“Blade shamers” are usually the “latest and greatest” guys trying to justify their yearly attempt at buying a game.
