Phil Mickelson’s new mystery hybrid – GolfWRXers discuss
In our forums, our members have been discussing at length Phil Mickelson’s new hybrid. The new club landed in Lefty’s bag recently at the Rocket Mortgage Classic, with details on the latest hybrid being mysteriously vague.
“I think I found a hybrid I really love! Putting it in play this week and I’m excited to be back in Detroit for the Rocket Classic. My swing feels like Kiawah again after playing so so the last two weeks.” tweeted Mickelson just a couple of weeks ago, and it has piqued a lot of interest amongst gearheads.

What we do know is that 19-year-old Callaway staffer Akshay Bhatia had the club in the bag at the U.S. Open, and the hybrid features the words “Apex” on the sole.
At the same time, a weight port appears to be positioned close to the face, likely meaning lower spin characteristics than usual from a hybrid.
Our members have been speculating in our forums on the new hybrid, with more than a couple of interesting theories and opinions being thrown up from WRXers, with plenty claiming that the club is a new hybrid/fairway wood crossover.
Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.
- Golfingfanatic: “Sounds like it’s some sort of fairway wood/hybrid crossover. Akshay and Xander have been testing it, too.”
- belh22: “Tweener of hybrid and fairway wood. For better player. Low launch and spin.”
- trentyoung33: “This looks to be the “utility wood” that Phil tried out of Akshay Bhatia’s bag at the US Open in a practice round. Johnny Wunder was talking about it on TXG’s podcast right after the open. Said he didn’t even know how to describe it as it wasn’t really a hybrid but wasn’t a fairway wood either.”
- Fairway14: “My recollection is that the Super Hybrid was an all-titanium head. Maybe this new hybrid is a steel head?”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
