What GolfWRXers are saying about having just one club between driver and irons

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing unorthodox bag setups. WRXer ‘FormerBigDaddy’ is currently using a 3-wood and a 19-degree rescue club and tells fellow members:

“Seems weird to me to only have a single club between driver and irons, but I almost never hit my 3 wood. I don’t have much confidence in it, and I really don’t need it at my home course. I think I can get what I want out of a 17 degree rescue and hit it out of multiple lies and play different shots with it.

“I’ve always loved hitting 3 iron off the tee when the shot calls for it. Hard to miss big with it. Anyone else have a bag setup like this? Are there any tour players doing this?”

And WRXers have been sharing their thoughts in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • hobbstc: “I do. I have a 19deg hybrid. Use it off the tee, fairway, and rough just fine. Very versatile.”
  • uglande: “On windy days, I might go Driver-3W and then to my irons, which start at 2i and 4i. If what you’re adding is a 3i, you might consider something that’s more of a driving iron (or get a 2i) just to create some separation with your 4i.”
  • nostatic: “Depends on the course. I could live without my 3W as I have a 3H the I hit well. That said, I have a new home course and last time I’ve played I hit 3W probably 3-5 times, all off the deck. Part of that was playing in 25 mph winds, though.”
  • tatertot: “I go driver (250 yards), 15 degree 3 wood (230 yards) 19 degree 3 iron (210 yards).”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
