All things driving iron – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been going into detail on driving irons. WRXer ‘Mookieb10’ asks members:

“1) What club and loft do you play?

2) What other club do you play at that end of the bag?

3) Do you hit it off the deck or only the tee?

4) What do you get from your driving iron that you don’t get from a metal or hybrid?”

And WRXers have been sharing the details of their driving iron in our forums.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • MattyO1984: “1. Titleist 712U 3 iron bent to 20 degrees and with a Graphite Design Tour AD DI. 2. Titleist 915Hd. 3. Both. 4. Ball Flight – for me, Scottish Golf needs the more penetrating ball flight that the driving iron provides me with. Plenty of time for my hybrid, genuinely the easiest club in my bag to hit but the driving iron for me is more useful.”
  • FatThinShank: “1. U85 bent to 19° w/ steel fiber 110 X. 2. Tried out an 818 H1 hybrid but really didn’t like it off the tee. 3. Mostly off the tee. 4. More accuracy and consistent ball flight. I found a hybrid to be hard to control off the tee and would balloon sometimes.”
  • bear87: “1. TaylorMade GAPR Mid-set to 21* with Diamana Thump X. 2. Ping G410 4H 22* with Graphite Design AD IZ X . 3. Deck and tee. 4. Knockdowns and butter cuts. “
  • Myherobobhope: “Sub70 22 degree… gapped between my Adams 18 hybrid and my sub70 5 iron. Turf or tee, it’s good.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
