‘Help me pick new irons’  – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been helping out GolfWRX member ‘MtlJeff’ in his hunt for new irons. ‘MtlJeff’ wants a new set of irons as a luxury purchase and says:

“I want new irons. I don’t NEED new irons I just want them. I also can’t get fit because of Covid. This is a luxury purchase. Please don’t tell me to get fitted. This is a luxury purchase. I basically have it narrowed down to:

1) Callaway Apex Pro ’21: I feel like these are too small for me. I’m a little concerned about playing the 4-5 irons.

2) Srixon ZX5/7 combo set: They look nice, but not crazy about the ZX5 loft bunching at the bottom, they have 3 irons in a 4 degree gap. Plus no gap wedge in lefty….ehh. Not good

2) Mizuno JPX921 SEL: Seems to make sense on paper. Loft spacing is nice. Forgiveness in the long irons and a gap wedge in lefty

3) TMAG P770: These are my favorite right now. I hear they are slightly bigger than the Callaways. They look really sexy with the blade-ish design…And TMAG has the best shaft offering, for example, I really want to try Modus 130s, and they are a free shaft with the P770s

So basically….Can anyone convince me not to get the TMAGs?”

And our members have been sharing their thoughts on the subject.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • XHoop24: “The 770s are an awesome looking iron. I’ve heard ‘feel’ is just ok and maybe not Mizuno soft but I can’t comment on that personally. I’d 100% combo with a 790 4 iron. Would be an awesome set of clubs. Honestly, couldn’t go wrong with any of those options.”
  • short and straight: “Pull a Fleetwood and mix it up. You’ll be more intimidating. I say older generation long irons from Srixon (4-5?), 770’s 5 or 6-P. Get a non-set gap wedge, and make sure it does not match your sand and lob. No one will want to play you for money.”
  • mizuno player: “I’m a Mizuno guy, so it’s hard to argue against that. But I will. The Apex pros look awesome, and I’ll bet they feel pretty darn good too. You can always get the regular Apex in the 4-5 and go Pro in the rest of the set.”
  • the bishop: “Do me a solid and try the W/S Staff Model CB’s. I play right-handed, but they are available in LH for you, and you can help me out with a buying decision. Thanks in advance.”

You can still get fit, just don’t make out with the fitter.

If “MtlJeff” means, Montreal Jeff, he can’t get fit because nothing golf related is open in Montreal or anywhere in Quebec, right now. Draconian lockdown in effect along with a curfew.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
