Fans to see player’s heart rates thanks to new Whoop partnership with PGA Tour
Whoop, the 24/7 fitness tracker and health monitor, has announced a multi-year partnership to become the official wearable of the PGA Tour – which will allow golf fans a look at the heart rates of tour pros for the first time.
Already worn by the likes of Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas to help them track sleep, recovery and strain, the partnership will see a new charity initiative called Whoop Live. The new initiative will highlight player biometric data and heart rate during the 2021 golf season’s most exciting moments.

Via the Whoop Live feature, these real-time human metrics will be integrated into video replay – when players hit pressure shots and drain clutch putts. The players featured will receive a contribution to the charity of their choice on behalf of Whoop and the PGA Tour.

Whoop will also create custom content with PGA TOUR Active (www.pgatour.com/active), a new Tour initiative highlighting health, fitness, and professional golfers’ lifestyles. Fans get an inside look into the techniques and activities helping the best players in the world perform at their peak.

In addition, Whoop will have a more significant onsite presence at all tour events in 2021 to provide VIP support and incorporate that technology with training and recovery staff and player performance centers.

What exactly is Whoop?
The Whoop 3.0 Strap collects physiological data 24/7 to provide the most accurate and granular understanding of your body. It contains a lightweight, waterproof strap and features the new and improved 5-day battery life and BLE connect.

Whoop collects physiological data that helps an individual optimize workouts, recovery, and sleep and can identify respiratory rate changes (RR).

For example, in June, when player Nick Watney was on-site at a tournament, he noticed his RR increased significantly overnight. He notified Tour officials and asked to be tested for Covid-19. A positive result ensued, and Watney pulled himself from the Tournament – because of the initial indication from his Whoop data, he was able to help keep other golfers safe.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.
