‘Replace 4-iron with what?’ – GolfWRXers discuss

Published

on

In our forums, our members have been discussing clubs to fill the 4-iron spot. WRXer ‘mholmstrm’ reaches out to fellow members, saying:

“My ‘3 Hybrid’ is a 19 Degree Titleist 910 and my 5i is 26 degrees, so I need something similar to a 4i with more forgiveness in the 23-degree range. What do you like? I prefer Cobra or Titleist at the top end of the bag.”

And our members have been sharing their suggestions in our forum.

Here are a few posts from the thread, but make sure to check out the entire discussion and have your say at the link below.

  • Metro-PA: “I did something similar a while back. Put in a Mizuno CLK 4 hybrid… 22*. Tried several others but couldn’t beat the feel/consistency of the Mizuno. They sort of fly under the radar, but worth testing.”
  • nearfall152: “Not for everyone, and not one of your stated preferences; however, I suggest trying an Epic forged 4 iron. It works well for me for tight tee shots for the distances you are referencing.”
  • ChipNRun: “Consider the Ben Hogan Edge 4i: 22*, hollow-head forged construction, with KBS, DG and Recoil models as stock shafts. Edge falls in GI class.”
  • SmashGolfBall: “Titleist 4 hybrid with 24 degrees of loft.”
  • jomatty: “I’d get one of the new Srixon utility irons. Or if you want to stay TaylorMade get a 770 4i. Cobra doesn’t have anything that jumps out at me to fill that slot, but Titleist u510 would do a good job.”

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping

Published

on

Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.

That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.

On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”

On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”

“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

Check out Shipley’s full what’s in the bag and the rest of his wedge stampings here on “Inside the Ropes” from Colonial.
