Wilson Golf launches new raw, unpainted Staff Model R golf ball
Wilson Golf has introduced its all-new Staff Model R golf ball featuring a first-of-its-kind raw, unpainted cover aimed to provide aerodynamic consistency and pure, precise ball flight to the intended target.

The Staff Model R is designed for PGA Tour professionals and low handicap players and contains a 4-piece maximum-velocity construction that bids to deliver long-distance and a thin urethane cover designed to promote maximum spin for greenside control.

The ball’s key feature is a raw unpainted cover, which aims to provide ultimate precision, accuracy and reliability, and speaking on the new addition, Bob Thurman, Vice President Wilson Labs said
“Staff Model R is unpainted as the dimple cross-section geometry and the pattern of dimples on a golf ball are critical aerodynamic elements that affect the flight performance of the ball in terms of trajectory, distance and directional stability. These dimples are a mere 0.004-0.007 inches deep and super sensitive to the level of paint on the ball.”

Further, discussing the unpainted cover, Thurman noted
“Our internal testing shows that tour quality balls on the market can drift offline as much as +/- 25 feet on a 200-yard 5 Iron shot. The Staff Model R ball’s urethane cover has been left completely unpainted, creating a nearly perfect aerodynamic surface that can be relied on to deliver the ball to its intended target.”

The Staff Model R ball is finished with a modern Staff Model stamp and is available now at Wilson.com and select retailers for $44.99.

Neal Shipley, AKA, the “Big Fridge’s,” custom stamping
Neal Shipley was the first to admit that he enjoyed his food while in college. But since his days at Ohio State, he’s slimmed down and earned a PGA Tour Card.
That hasn’t stopped him from having fun with his wedge stampings, though it’s led to some misunderstandings.
On the 54 (degree), we have ‘Big Fudge,'” Shipley told GolfWRX. “It was supposed to be ‘Big Fridge,’ so this happened a little while ago. ‘Big Fridge’ was a nickname between my college teammates and I, with ‘fridge’ meaning stomach, a big stomach.

“We told the Ping guys to put … ‘Big Fridge’ on it, and I think maybe some bad cell service or something, and they thought I said ‘fudge,’ so they put fudge on it.”
On Shipley’s 50-degree he also continues the food theme, this time with his go-to order at the “Golden Arches,” and his stamping “DONS 7.”
“The number 7 meal, the two cheeseburger meal, that was my McDonald’s order, back when I would have McDonald’s frequently,” Shipley shared.

I’d like to take a guess here that Wilson does not have the technology to produce a tour caliber ball but relying 100% on its Taiwanese vendor.
